Activities during the course
TESOL certificate is a four week, 120 hours intensive course, teaching
students how to teach English as a second language.
During the course the trainees go through a foreign language experience
in an unknown language to reflect on the experience of being a learner,
and how this might direct their own teaching. They work with individual
students (10 year olds to adults) on rapport-building, error analysis
and correction and addressing individual student needs. Teaching
technique inputs normally cover, lesson planning models – with peer
teaching, theater techniques, classroom management, reading and writing
activities, songs and chants, textbook review and evaluation and a lot
of other relevant inputs through interactive sessions.
Apart from the course contents the trainees have discussions on Indian
culture, customs, food, traditions and clothing.
Week end trips:
-
A day trip in and around the city is planned for the trainees. Places
visited so far have been Mayapur (an ISKCON village)
-
A know the city trip (Science City, Amusement Park and Swabhumi- a
heritage park)
-
Trip to Belurmath and Dakshineshwar (showing Bengal Temple
architecture).
-
Trainees also receive assistance in planning weekend trips to Tagore’s
Shantiniketan, the Sunderbans, Puri or Digha (beaches).
Lunch:
The end of the course is marked by a traditional Bengali lunch at either
Kewpie’s (mentioned in the Lonely Planet) or at Bhojohori Manna one of
the highly rated restaurants in the city. Sometimes they are taken to a
Chinese restaurant (Main land China one of the best restaurants in the
city) as Kolkata has a sizable Chinese population and boasts of serving
the best Chinese cuisine in the country.
Teaching Practice and Observation:
All teachers are expected to perform:
3 sessions of observing experienced teachers
Peer observation
Shared teaching practice
At least 8 sessions of individual teaching practice.
The teaching practice sessions are always considered to be the most
rewarding part of the course. The excitement of facing a class and
conducting a lesson is experienced first hand. However the trainees are
helped every step of the way from writing detailed lesson plans to
receiving feedback after each teaching practice. The teacher trainees
teach students in local schools ranging from beginner to intermediate
levels and in the age group ranging from 10 to 14 year. |
